thx. I didn't have that, but I suspected. And I just found Gladys in the census, so I was just a step behind you on this one. [woops! Sorry, I was working on another mystery, just in the process of resolving.]

I'm descended from Michael WEIMER/Rebecca BARR, from George WEIMER/Eve WEIDERICH side. Grew up in Coudersport, but an avid 'genealogist' now, trying to identify all of these people to whom I'm related in the area and had no idea. Probably related to you, too, but I don't know much about you, either.
Are you a Barr or Weimer?

Ha! I'm descended from Varney (My dad's mother was Melda Varney Wetzel) but from WV clan (descended from both Hatfields & McCoys of feud fame). I've seen 'Varney' in the area; is there a connection with WV?

Out Of The Attic
There are some familiar (if younger) faces in this photo, which depicts the proud members of the Roulette High School class of 1944. When the picture was taken, the Roulette School had just a few more years of service left before "consolidation" arrived. Then it was closed, and the roulette area students were transported across the coiunty border to attend high school in Port Allegany.
Later, the L.L. Smith Elementary School was also closed and its students transported to Port Allegany. Roulette students earning diplomas in 1944, left to right, included:
front:
- Jane Ernst,
- Ila Clark,
- Betty Hoak,
- Helen Samson,
- Ruth Thompson;
back:
- Leslie Smith,
- Harold Howard,
- Kathryn Stewart,
- Lawrence Knight,
- Mike VanBergen and
- Peter Chastain.
There are tales to tell about each of these students. For example, Harold Howard went on to serve as Potter County Treasurer, Prothonotary and Commissioner during a long political career. Today, he's affiliated with Citizens Trust Company.
Betty Hoak is the sister of the late Don Hoak, the Roulette native who played professional baseball and was the third baseman for the world champion Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960.
Jane Ernst is now Mrs. Arnold Haskins, who worked for many years in the school cafeteria at Coudersport. She supplied us with this photo.
