They were paid poorly. Supervisors were males. Congressman James Hastings of Allegany, later of Rushford, N.Y., was a silent partner in the ongoing company an munitions operations, which sold to the Defense Dept. It closed as soon as the war was over. Eldred National Powder, where this explosion took place, operated for nearly 100 years making nitro-glycerine and dynamite.
