Note from Ruth Jordan Thoden who has been into ancestry for some time and identifies herself as expert:
“My ggg-grandfather, John JORDAN born March 9, 1764 (don't know where);
married probably in Orange Co., NY 1785 to Julia SWARTOUT who was born 1769
d/o Jacobus SWARTOUT. Jacobus was living in 1785 in Sugar Loaf, town of
Warwick, Orange Co., NY and assume his 16-year-old daughter, Julia, was living
with him at the time of her wedding. John JORDAN does NOT appear in the 1790
census of NYS as 1-2-1...as he would having had two males born to Julia by
census time 1790.
By 1800, John/Julia and family residing in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY
beside her father, Jacobus, and her brother, Moses...She died between 1807 and
1810. An unnamed male child born to her in 1807 and she does not appear in
the 1810 census with John. John continued to reside in Cherry Valley until
about 1848 when he it was thought he joined three of his sons in the town of
Wirt, Allegany Co., NY but having recently found his will probate in
Cooperstown, county seat, Otsego Co., learned he died town of Pike, Wyoming
County, NY which is where one of his three daughters had settled. He died
1/26/1850 and is buried on lot of my gg-grandfather, Jacob JORDAN, in Mount
Hope Cemetery, Friendship, Allegany Co., NY (town in which I was born and
brought up)
Issue of this marriage:
MICHAEL who stated in 1855 census for Steuben Co., NY that he had been born in
Orange Co., NY.
WILLIAM who settled Steuben Co.
JESSE who settled Steuben Co. All of these three died in Steuben County, NY.
BETSEY - married Sebastion WELLER and lived in Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY
ISAIAH - migrated from Otsego to Steuben Co. as young lad with his brother,
Michael and lived with Michael until he married Polly Dakin, d/o Elisha...so
after marriage, Elisha Dakin and Isaiah with bride migrated to town of Wirt,
Allegany Co., NY and bought virgin land there.
JOHN and JAMES both settled in early 1820's in Cuba, Allegany Co., NY.
JULIA MARGARET - married Charles Phelps and settled Pike, Wyoming Co., NY
ANDREW - migrated from Otsego Co. to Allegany Co. buying land adjacent to his
brother, Isaiah in town of Wirt.
JACOB - my gg-grandfather also migrated from Otsego Co. to Allegany Co. buying
land adjacent to that of Isaiah.
SALLY - married John Dygert and lived Canajoharie, Montgomery Co, NY
UNNAMED SON - probably died at birth...
Tradition among family members is that the JORDAN clan came from Ireland, but
I've no proof one way or another. I've analyzed ALL Jordans who lived in
Orange County, NY before, during and after Revolution and find no connection
with my John JORDAN. Julia, wife of John, had two brothers, Aaron and Moses
SWARTOUT who married at the Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange Co., NY but no record of John Jordan or Julia Swartout being baptized, married or ever
attending this church.
I've pretty much ruled out the possibility of my John JORDAN being a YORDON
(Palatine family who came to Mohawk Valley between 1709-1711)....
I've not ruled out possibility that my John JORDAN may have been product of
a JORDAN family who were Tories and fled to Canada...he returning after the
Revolution. There was such a family in Westchester Co., NY -- John JORDAN
born Scotland in 1729 descendants....but my John not part of this family.”
From records of Ruth Jordan Thodan: Liber 82:562 Cherry Valley Land Records, Otsego Co, NY
Indenture of John Jordan land - January 12 1848 - John Jordan of Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., NY, sold his farm to John Gillett for $3000.00. This land was made up of lands most of which he had purchased May 7, 1813. One-third of this purchase was from Dewitt Clinton and Maria, his wife and two-thirds from John S. Norton and Sally his wife.
Land was in Lot 40 of LIVINGSTON PATENT..beginning at a beech SW corner of Lot 40 and running south 52 degrees and 32 chains, 92 links; then north 38 degrees and 32 chains 91 links; then north 52 degrees west 32 chains 92 links..containing 111 acres and 28 perches.*
The total amount was 111 acres and 28 perches. The sale to Gillett also included one acre of land which he had bought from Moses Lewis on January 23, 1832.
Ezra Lewis and Joseph Colver owned land on the east and north of our John's land. John's property was free of debt. This land also in Lot 40 of LIVINGSTON PATENT, it being adjacent to land he bought in 1813.
*Perch - square rod or 30-1/4 square yards
I haven't been able to get any farther back than 1764 John Jordan.
Possibly back to Roelof Swartwout
1575-1634 Groningen, Netherlands on his wife's, Julia, side.
