KIBBE Well Known Farmer of Harrison Township Dies at Age of Eighty-One Monday morning Thomas J. Kibbe, of Harrison township, died at the age of 81 years. He had been sick several weeks with no hope of his recovery. He was in Washington county, N.Y., in April, 1831, and was the son of David Kibbe. His parents came to Potter county in 1833, and settled in Harrison township, where they resided until their death. In his early manhood Thomas Kibbe settled on the farm where he lived at the time of his death, and he has been one of the most successful farmers in this section of the state. He was a veteran of the Civil War. He was drafted in 1863, and served eight months in Co. B, 189th Penna. Regiment. After his discharge he again enlisted in Company I, 171st New York Volunteers, in which served a year and five days when he was honorably discharged. In June, 1853, he was married to Dorcas, daughter of Joseph Cotton, and they have had eleven children. The wife survives, but is critically ill, The children born to them are: Sally A., who married Malvin Baker; Juliette, who marired Theo Hunt; Alonzo, James H., Luzern F., Mary Z., Thomas J., Jr., Sherman E., George W., Arthur E. and Adortha. All his life Mr. Kibbe had been a staunch Republican. The funeral will be held Sunday, and the body will be laid to rest in a magnificent vault that he has had built for his last repose in the Whitesville cemetery.. In June, 1853, he was married to Dorcas, daughter of Joseph Cotton, and they have had eleven children.

It appears it was a family decision because Electa's parents, William and Martha Ballard (Ballord) Brown, also moved to Bingham township in Potter county. William and Martha had originally migrated from Massachusetts in the late 1790s. There, in Potter county, Joseph and Electa's other children, Dorcas, Rachel, James, Lyda and Electa Jane were born. It's not known the circumstances that caused the premature death (age 33) of Joseph's wife but Electa died when their daughter, Electa Jane, was only a year and one month old. Electa's gravestone is very weathered but still readable. Its inscription reads, "Electa A wife of Joseph Cotton". Mothering baby Electa, must have fallen into the hands of her older sister, Dorcas, and for some unknown reason (alcohol perhaps) parenting was more than Joesph could handle. It should be noted that even later in life, Joseph was not living on his own. At the age of 9, Joseph's daughter, Electa Jane, was adopted by Joseph's wife's sister, also named Dorcas, and her new husband, James Kibbe. By the year 1860 the Kibbe head of house reported to the census bureau that James Kibbe, age 46 b. NY, Dorcas Kibbe, age 50 b NY, Electa (Cotton) Kibbe, age 16 b PA, Martha Brown, age 92 (Electa's mother) and Ezra Lewis Fuller (future husband of Electa), age 23 b NY were all living in the household.
According to the 1870 census bureau report, Ezra Lewis Fuller, age 33, and his wife, Electa Jane (Cotton-Kibbe), age 26. were living in the household of James Kibbe, age 56 b NY and Dorcas (Brown) Kibbe, age 59 b NY. Also living with them were the children of Ezra and Electa, Harden Fuller, age 8 b PA, James W Fuller, age 3 b PA, Mary Fuller, age 2 b PA, and Martha Fuller, age 2 1/2 months b PA. Also living in the household was Lyman D. Fuller.
By 1880 in Genesee Township, the Fuller family consisted of, Ezra Lewis, age 43, Electa, age 36, Hardin, age 18, James, age 13, Mary, age 12, Martha, age 10, Dolly, age 7, Ruth, age 6, Norman, age 3, Kate, age 3 1/2 months. Also living with Ezra and Electa was Dorcas Kibbe, age 71.
The 1880 census report also reveals that the mother and father (Diodate & Martha Olmstead Fuller) of Ezra Lewis Fuller were born in Connecticut and the mother and father of Electa were born in Massachusetts. It also reveals that Dorcas (Brown) Kibbe was also born in Massachusetts. It would appear that the two families may have known each other in Massachusetts.
In 1854 the federal Graduation Act of 1854 allowed European-American settlers to purchase land from the government at discount rates, and the first white settlers began to arrive in what became Mount Pleasant. Under the Treaty of 1855, the Ojibwa bands (Saginaw Chippewa Tribe) from the Saginaw, Swan Creek, and Black rivers were relocated to land in Isabella County (Isabella Indian Reservation). Many non-natives soon moved to Mount Pleasant, predicting prosperous relations with the natives. The Homestead Act of 1862 also attracted many new settlers, including new European immigrants, to Mount Pleasant to develop their stake on free lands offered by the US government in exchange for their labor in developing it for residence and agriculture. With the promise of free land, and bearing a heavy heart hearing of the death of his son, James, who was shot on the first of July at the battle of Gettysburg, Joseph Cotton left Potter county with the family of David and Rachael Kibbe and moved to Mt Pleasant, Michigan. In 1870, at the age of 63, Joseph was still living the the Kibbe household. He died three years later and was buried in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

ANOTHER MOTHER GONE
Mrs. Electa J. Fuller Passes Away at the Age of 74.
At her old home in North Bingham some days ago occurred the death of Mrs. Electa J. Fuller, a christian friend as well as a noble wife and mother. She was seventy four years old and was the mother of Mrs. Albert E. Davie, the wife of the well known Allegany township farmer and business man.
Mrs. Fuller is survived by other children including: Norman Fuller, of Hornell, N. Y., Mrs. Martha Betz, of New York City, Mrs. Kate Levermom of North Carolina. This sad death occurred Saturday morning, May 25th, and the funeral was held at North Bingham on the following Monday, Rev. G. H. Carr, of LewisviIle officiated. Bert Simmons, funeral director. Interment in the North Bingham cemetery. One more noble and aspiring soul has passed to the beyond.
By her will she made her son-in-law A. E. Davie, administrator of her estate, and he has duly qualified, which is evidence which is evidence that her affairs will be fairly settled. Mr. and Mrs. Davie and others of their family were called to North Bingham by the death and for the funeral. (This information unintentionally omitted from a former issue.)

I unexpectedly met one of your and my second cousins, Bill Morey. Like you and me, Bill shares the same great grandparents, Albert and Dorothy "Dollie" Fuller Davey. He's quite a bit older than me so he had some memories that I hadn't heard. One had to do with the reason Dorothy passed away so long before Albert. I had been a bit perplexed by that. Usually, it's the husband who dies before the wife.

Bill told me that "Dollie" was boiling pine sap on the stove. She may have been making rosin. I found this on wikipedia, "Rosin, also called colophony or Greek pitch (Pix græca), is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants, mostly conifers, produced by heating fresh liquid resin to vaporize the volatile liquid terpene components. It is semi-transparent and varies in color from yellow to black. At room temperature rosin is brittle, but it melts at stove-top temperatures. It chiefly consists of different resin acids, especially abietic acid.[1] The term "colophony" comes from colophonia resina or "resin from the pine trees of Colophon," an ancient Ionic city." Whatever the reason, while she was boiling the stuff, she accidentally spilled it on her and she was burned so badly that she later died. Dollie is our music connection to Nicholas Lanier and Anthony Bassano.
