Hubbard lineage - letter from Hubbard B Taylor
Although we have quite a few letters written to Hubbard B Taylor, we only have one letter written by Hubbard B Taylor and it was sent to Mr. G Taylor Lane in Lancaster Penn. and reads as follows:
May 1st 1852
Dear sir: (G. Taylor Lane) brother of Clarissa - wife of Hubbard Taylor - brother of Hubbard B. Taylor's father Reuben)
Yours of last month inclosing [enclosing] or rather authorizing me to check on Messers E (possibly Shereth) and Phila_mas received and I succeeded in affecting a sale to the cashier of Northern Bank Ky. --for which you will please accept my thanks-- and plus congratualtions that this tardy business has at last been closed--under all circumstances I am glad it turned out no worse--------
You say Mr. Lee writes he will not be able to collect the "decree" money till August--better then, by far, than never-It is, at any rate, an unexpected piece of good fortune to me --I was looking for nothing and getting something tho, but little, comparatively, makes it quite agreeable inteleginse [intelligence}--in every case where a matter of a similar nature to our little claims on East, is submitted to your discretion, I wish you act so far as I am concerned, for me, just as you would for yorself.
I saw your sister Clarissa and family on yesterday--all well-- They appear to be looking and in fact need those "few articles of clothing" promised by your Uncle John--I hope the old man has not forgotten it.
I met with James on Monday last in Winchester--He tells me he has succeeded in collecting all of the claims in favor of your mother's estate except the note vs. the Estate of Mr. Richie--a part of which I suppose will of course be lost as the Admint. declares the assets to be minus the debts by several hundred dollars--I have not heard from William very recently but he was not well when I last saw him.
The rest of our friends appear to be their usual health at present except my father who appears too be gradually getting more infirm and frequently suffers a good deal of pain in his limbs.
On tomorrow we are to have the funeral Sermon of Mrs. Valentine Martin, the mother of Rev. Hubbard H. Kavanaugh and three other sons in the ministry, by her first husband--preached at Ebenezer--We expect a large crowd to listen to the Rev. Lorenzo Dow Weston (? spelling) a very talented and fine speaker--This somewhat remarakable lady is a relative of ours whose genealogy I shall not attempt to trace farther than to say that her Mother was sister to your great grandmother and she the daughter of the famous progenitor by the maternal side of our branch of the Taylor Family,--I mean old Benjiman Hubbard one of the early English Emigrants [immigrants] to the shores of "The Old Dominon" who settled at that early day as a merchant in Orange Co. VA. This man married a Miss Todd, it is said, after courting her seven years and had three daughters--One married a man by the name of Andrew Madison, another Dr. Thomas (not legible - possibly Ninde or Hinde) an Englishman and the 3rd your great grandfather then Col. James Taylor of Caroline County, Virginia--the name of the last mentioned lady was Miss Ann Hubbard and that is the stock from which the Hubbard tribe, who have become numerous in Ky. especially, took their rise, so far as their American genealogy can trace them--But as to the balance of our trans-Atlantic Ancestors I am not able to trace farther than that old Mr. Benjamin Hubbard was imported from England but whether sprung from the (Short house-these two words not legible) or some other family of English stock, I have never been able to learn--but this will give to serve you a clue to our relationship to the deceased Mrs. Martin--her son the Rev. H.H. Kavanaugh is our stationed preacher for this year and an able Minister he is--I wish you could hear him on some important occasion. I have just discovered to my surprise that I have written you three pages--I thought it was only two but if you should weary in the reading my only apology is, I was afraid you would not know your kin.
Our children are not quite well, all have colds--Alice joins me in love--write frequently postage is cheap and writing an easy task for you. Yrs truly
H. B. Taylor
