Lucinda Gump first married Jacob Mercer in 1860. Jacob mustered into the Civil War on Jan. 4, 1864 to Co. C, 7th Regiment WV Volunteers at Stevensburgh, VA at the age of 26. He was described as being 5'8", grey eyes and fair complexion. Jacob was wounded in the Battle of Petersburg and died from his wounds at Campbell Hospital, Washington D.C. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. One son was born from this union: William Edward Mercer On December 17, 1865, Lucinda married John W. Mercer. They had seven children together: Martin Samuel Joseph James A. Philip Jeremiah Pearl B. Lucinda was a member of the Methodist Church.
