  Source Medium: Electronic Lewis Wetzel (1764 or 1763-1808) was a frontiersman and Indian hunter. Novelist Zane Grey expressed the hope that his treatment of Wetzel "softens a little the ruthless name history accords him." Grey said that "the border needed Wetzel. The settlers would have needed many more years in which to make permanent homes had it not been for him. He was never a pioneer; but always a hunter of Indians." Wetzel County is named for him.
