Hatfield and McCoy Feud

· In 1886, Jeff McCoy, son of Asa Harmon McCoy-and nephew of Ran’l McCoy-killed one Fred Wolford in Pike County. He then fled to West Virginia, and learned of the beating of his sisters at the home of Bill Daniels [by Tom Wallace and Cap Hatfield].

With the help of Josiah Hurley, McCoy sought to arrest Tom Wallace, but failed to do so, and only succeeded in infuriating Cap Hatfield. Hatfield soon obtained warrants for the arrest of McCoy and Hurley, but McCoy attempted to escape but was arrested by Hatfield and Wallace.

[While resisting the arrest,] McCoy jumped into the Tug River to swim to safety on the Kentucky side. When he reached the shore a fatal shot hit him. It is not certain if Hatfield or Wallace fired that shot.

My great uncle, Thomas "Milt" Haley, along with William Green McCoy, cousin to Randall McCoy, was accused of ambushing Al Brumfield and his wife in Logan County, West Virginia and were savagely shot and beaten to death. They never proved they did it. I would love to see pictures of Milt Haley if anybody ever comes across any.
