John M LeFever was a native of Ohio. He was a resident of Wilton, Iowa when he enlisted as a Private in Co D 11th Iowa Infantry at the age of 18 on 17 Sep 1861. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 1 Jan 1865 and mustered out 15 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

John married Mary Sherrell in 1883 and together they had nine known children: Nellie, John, Minnie M, Eddie H, Louella, Elsie P, Pansy F, Floyd F and a child that died in infancy.

They lived many years in Fremont County, Iowa and in 1920 were living in Nebraska. John died in Nebraska at the age of 88 years.
