Withers’ book is still one of the primary sources on backwoods life in the Alleghenies and upper Ohio. Theodore Roosevelt (quoted by Larned) called this book “one of the number of books which have a great value because they preserve the traditions of the border about the Indian fighting of the second half of the eighteenth century in the West.” Includes the advertisement leaf.

A rare 4-page “Contents” page is inserted loosely; this is usually missing as it was printed after publication. Howes W601.

Very good; tight and sound; housed in protective clamshell box w/ leather spine label; in original, worn contemporary calf w/ leather spine label. Corners lightly bumped, extremities rubbed, front joint starting. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf from Wheeling, Va., dated July 16th, 1832.
