· "She — [Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln] —wouldn't tolerate any foolishness. She showed me just how everything was to be done in the garden, frequently 'calling me down' and making me do my work over. Mr. Lincoln was quite different from Mrs. Lincoln — slow and deliberate." — Rafe Hatfield
_____

Lora Miller, a resident of Stilwell, Oklahoma, and a Hatfield and McCoy Feud page member, submitted several images of Rafe Norval “Raphe or Doc” Hatfield (March 28, 1846 - February 20, 1934). Rafe, also called “Ralph” by some locals, was once the young gardener for Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Lora also provided several pertinent news clippings.

With her offerings, Lora also wrote, "I also possess several newspaper clippings about Rafe, who was once the gardener for Abraham Lincoln before he became president.”
She added, “When my grandmother passed away in 2023, I began my genealogy journey, trying to document and record everything she shared with me growing up about our family. It's my way of keeping her spirit alive. Her name was Betty Lou Stevens Keeter, and her mother, Minnie Ann Hatfield, was Rafe and Sarah's youngest child."

Rafe’s parents were Mordecai Ale Hatfield (1817–1869) and Milla "Millie" Richardson Hatfield (1819–1875). Rafe had two spouses during his lifetime: Rebecca Jane Long Hatfield (1849-1875) and Sarah Elizabeth Spinks Hatfield (1855-1933).

The children of Rife included Henry Mordecai Hatfield (1870–1947); John Andrew Dunning Hatfield (1874–1952); Eve Ellen Hatfield Morrison (1877–1948); Jossie L. Hatfield Mathews (1882–1923); Martin Hatfield (1884–1907); Amos Jay Hatfield (1889–1944); and Minnie Ann Hatfield Stevens (1896–1978).
