· JOHN WESLEY WORKMAN — DESCENDANT OF SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA’S FIRST SETTLERS
LOGAN, WV — John Wesley Workman, pictured here in a timeworn photograph, lived on the West Virginia side of the Tug River, likely near the county seat of Logan. For many years, he earned his living working with various timber crews throughout the region.
Decades earlier, Logan County began to take shape following the arrival of John Wesley’s ancestors—the pioneering Workman family, widely believed to have been among the first white settlers in the area. Shortly after the close of the American Revolutionary War in the late 1790s, they ventured into the rugged Guyan Valley to establish new lives along its rivers and forests.
According to the historical research and writings of George T. Swain in 1927, James Workman, along with his brothers Joseph and Nimrod, built a simple log cabin in 1794 and planted corn on what was then known as “the island.” This land, once the site of a Native American settlement, is today called Middleburg Island, located near present-day Logan. Before erecting their cabin, the brothers cleared the remaining traces of the earlier settlement that occupied part of the tract.
In the fall of 1796, James Workman brought his wife and children from Wythe County (now Tazewell County), Virginia, to Logan. Together, the three brothers and their families continued carving out a livelihood along the Guyandot—now spelled Guyandotte—River, remaining in the region until about 1800.
Throughout his life, John Wesley Workman carried a deep pride in his family’s enduring legacy and their foundational role in the early history of southern West Virginia. See less

I have a ton of matches to WV Workman's. Hatfield and McCoy matches and I am a Messer. I wonder if Campbell/Justice/Larimar are tied to them. My great aunt times a few was a Bruce who married a McCoy.
