Christian Hershey and his three children, Benjamin, Andrew and Anna, located in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1709. The father was a Bishop in the Mennonite Church, and was succeeded in that office by his son Benjamin. The first Mennonite society held services in a log building located on the land of Benjamin Hershey. Riipp's collection of thirty thousand German and Swiss settlers in Pennsylvania shows that thirtv-four located in Lancaster Co. prior to 1712.

It appears that another Hershey came into Lancaster Co. in 171L His name, however, is not known to the writer. In 1719 two brothers, both mmisters of the Mennonite Church, arrived with their father. They were Rev. Andrew Hershey and Rew Benjamin Hershey, with their father, Hans Hersche. In 1739, a third brother, also a minister, Rev. Christian Hershey, arrived, having been detained in some capacity at the German Court at Friedensheim. The writer is a descendent of the Andrew of this family. A Christian Hershey arrived in Philadelphia in 1743 by the ship Lydia from Rotterdam. He was thirty years old. Nothing is known of him or his descendants.^ The same must be said of the 1752 arrival. So far as we know the Hersheys in this country, they are descended from the two families — the 1709 and the 1719 group.

Bishop Christian Hershey, an elderly Swiss gentleman, was the first Hershey to appear in this country. He located in Lancaster Co., Pa., with his three children. His son, Benjamin, was a Bishop in the Mennonite Church. Bishop in the Mennonite Church was not similar to that office in the Catholic, Episcopal or even in the Methodist Church. A Bishop in the Mennonite Church was the head pastor, or a sort of President of the Board of Ministers. It indicates the distinction of service and honor held by our fathers in that church. This and other titles will be used merely to distinguish the different branches, and for this it is very useful.

Christian Hershey was the first Mennonite Bishop in this country. He held the office until his death. He was succeeded by his son, Benjamin, who was in turn Bishop until his death.

From the issue of Wednesday Aug 5, 1789 of the Neue UnpartheyischeLancaster Zeitung, und Anzeigs-Nachrichten, translated and readbefore the Lancaster County Historical Society in 1931.

Died, last Wednesday night (July 29, 1789), on his plantation nearthis town, Benjamin Hirshe, old and tired of living. He was in hisninety third year of his age. His remains were interred on Fridaymorning in the Near by God's acre, attached to the meetinghouse aboutone mile from his home. His funeral was attended by a large followingof all classes and denominations. He had been bedfast for the pastfive years, owing to his great age. He came to this country fromGermany in 1717, and since that time lived on his farm. He was one ofthe oldest inhabitants of this county. For more than fifty years hewas a teacher and a worker in the vineyard of the Lord. He servedthe Mennonite congregation at all times with fidelity, and by them, hewill be remembered in blessing forever. He will be mourned by all whoknew him.

At the beginning of this, there is a note that says, See page 90 forfirst mention. Page 90 reads as follows:

The first bishop in the (Lancaster District) Brubaker, now Rohrerstowndistrict in Lancaster PA was: Bishop Benjamin Hershey who emigratedwith his colony from Switzerland, and settled just west of Lancasterin 1717. He served as bishop in this district as long as his healthand strength permitted him to attend to the duties of his office. Hisson, who resided with his father on the homestead, was also aminister, and he, Benjamin Hershey was ordained to succeed his fatheras bishop of the Church. He died in 1812. At what time theseordinations occurred is not known.
