Valentine Giamatti, 71, Dies;
Was Leading Dante Scholar
Associated Press SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Valentine Giamatti, a retired professor of Italian at Mount Holyoke College and the father of Yale University President Richard Giamatti, is dead at the age of 71. Giamatti died Wednesday while on vacation in Bonita Springs, Fla., Mount Holyoke College spokeswoman Irmina M. Kowalski said. Autopsy exam- | nents were incomplete Thursday, she said. Giamatti, a scholar on the life and works of Dante Alighieri, was a mem- ber of the Dante Society of Florence, Italy, and a delegate to the 700th anni- versary of the birth of Dante, celebrat- ed in Florence, Verona and Ravenna. He collected and donated approxi- mately 2,000 in 29 different lan- guages, dating to the year 1481, of Dante's "The Divine Comedy" and donated the collection to Mount Ho- lyoke. He had two sons, A. Bartlett, curator of the collection, and Giamatti was born Feb. 9, 1911, in New Haven and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale in 1932. He studied there as a recipient of the Sterling Me- morial Scholarship. He did graduate work as a Bidwell-Foeet Fellow at Yale, advanced stud- ies at the University of Perugia and the University of Florence, and re- ceived a doctorate in 1940 from Har- vard University. He also received a doctor of letters from the University of Florence. He later studied there again and at the University of Rome and in several Etruscan towns. Giamatti joined the faculty at Mount Holyoke, the nation's oldest private women's college, in 1940 and became dean of the college in 1965, in his 33-year teaching career at the campus in the Connecticut Valley.
He also leaves his wife, Mary Walton Giamatti;
a son, Dino, owner of the Atlantic House Hotel in Scarborough, Maine;
a daughter, Elria Ewing of Vienna, Va.; and nine grandchildren.
