Nathan Hale was an American patriot, soldier, and spy during the Revolutionary War who, at age 21, volunteered for an intelligence mission behind British lines. Captured near Flushing Bay in September 1776 with incriminating notes, he was executed by hanging the next day. Remembered as a hero and Connecticut’s state hero, Hale is famed—though possibly apocryphally—for declaring, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
