ALE HATFIELD: In a time when family ties often shaped the course of Appalachian history, this portrait is believed to show Ale Hatfield, a man whose name quietly threads through the early generations of the Hatfield clan.
As the brother of Ephraim “Eph of All” Hatfield—and great-uncle to Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield—Ale stood among the elders whose lives unfolded long before the feud would etch the family’s name into American folklore.
Though history preserves only faint traces of him, this image offers a rare, human glimpse into the roots of a lineage that would one day become legend.

It was Darrell Cline, a friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page, who first submitted this vintage photo to the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page some years ago.
At the time, Darrell described the portrait as being Ale Hatfield, the brother of Ephraim "Eph of All" Hatfield (Ephraim was the grandfather of Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield and his siblings; so, Ale would have been the great-uncle to Devil Anse and his brothers and sisters).
Thank you, Darrell, for your contribution.

Thank you for sharing this. Ale is 4th great grandfather. His daughter Nancy married John McCoy. That is my direct line. I would love it if anyone has the family history. John McCoy and Nancy Hatfield were my 3rd great grandparents. My Dad was a McCoy. Again thank you for any information.
