• An Athens County mother, her son and nephew drowned in the Hocking River two miles east of Stewart Sunday afternoon.
The Athens County sheriff’s department listed the drowning victims as Mrs. Irene M. Brookover, 39, Bertie L. Brookover, 10, of Stewart Rt. 1 and Terry Lynn Rexroads, 8, of Lumberport, W. Va.
The Rexroads boy and his mother were visiting the Brookover family.
The boys were wading in the river on a sandbar about 4 PM when Terry was swept downstream by a swift undercurrent. The brookover boy tried to reach him and wasa also swept under. Mrs Brookover endeavored to reach the two and was also carried under.
A swimmer, James England, 15, of Frost Rt. 1, reached Mrs Brookover about five minutes after she wwent under and brought her to shore. Resuscitation attempts were in vain.
Athens firemen recovered her son's body about 6 PM and other divers recovered the body of the Rexroads boy aboiut 10 PM
Girl, 13, Drowns In Hocking County
Hocking County had its first drowning of the year Sunday when a 13-year-old Fairfield County girl lost her life in Clear Creek.
Dead is Donna Lou Bigham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Lee Bigham of Lancaster Rt. 1. She was one of 12 who drowned in Ohio over the weekend.
