• A PLAIN STATEMENT Regarding the Brookover Affidavit-The Register's Falsehoods.
To the Editor of the Intelligencer,
Sir:-On Tuesday the Register contained two articles charging that the amdavit of J. D. Brookover in regard to the Wetzel county frauds had been changed after being made by him, and this morning it says that that charge was untruethat "affidavit published in the INTELLIGENCER was substantially the same 19 the original," but adds that •Mr. Brookover was evidently juggled into signing it." The latter charge is as false and groundless as was the former, and as it reflects not only upon the writer of this, but also upon honesty of Mr. F. S. Snodgrass, the notary, and the intelligence of Mr. Brookover, it is proper that it should be noticed.
I requested Mr. Brookover to write the affidavit himself, but he suggested that I could write faster. After it was written I read the affidavit to Mr. Brookover and he read it carefully himself, saying that he could read any handwriting. There was no "juggling" about it. Mr. Brookover acted like an honest man and was very indignant at the effort that had been made to disgrace the county by the frauds upon the ballots, saying very emphatically that if Mr. Atkinson's name had been scratchad on ten tickets it had been done after they arrived at New Martinsville. Mr. Brookover knew that if ait were true that there were ten scratched tickets at Archer's Fork precinct, as indicated by the recount, then he and the other election officers there had committed perjury, and no one who knows them believes anything of the kind.
Having had the opportunity of talking with a large number of Democrats of this county during the past few days I deem it but just to them to say that I have not found one who did not believe that the fraud had been committed as charged, and who is not emphatically in favor of the full penalty of the law being meted out to the offenders, who have so disgraced our county. The Democrate of Wetzel county, a mass, are neither fools nor rascals as the Wheeling organ of the party would have the people of the State believe. Respectfully,
