• THE LATE GEORGE M. VARNEY.
The News of his Death Received at the Riverside With Universal Sorrow.
The news of the death of George M. Varney was received at the big plant of the Riverside Company, in Benwood, with a sorrow never before manifested at the death of any employe. Hundreds of men gave expression of their deep regret, and some even shed tears when they wre assured that their friend and fellow workman was no more. So universal was the mourning, that there was a decided disposition to close down the plant and attend the funeral in a body. The employes will be represented at the funeral this afternoon by three magnificent floral pieces.
Mr. Varney was chief engineer at the tube works, at the time of his death, as he was when elected to , the superinten-| dency of the city water works, over four years ago. He went to the Riverside in 1886, and no man in the employ of the Company was more popular with both officers and workmen, and the sentiments of sorrow so universally entertained and generally shown Monday and yesterday were alike creditable to the mill force and to the deceased. He will be long remembered by his fellow workmen..
