A Very Lage Funeral Occurred Yesterday Afternoon.
The funeral services over the remains of the late George Varney took place yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, No. 148 South Broadway, and it was one of the largest seen in the city in recent years.
In addition to Wheeling Commandery No. 1, K. T., and the Ancient Essenic Order, of which deceased was a member, there was a large attendance of friends and fellow workmen, from both the Riverside mill and city water works, and many officials from the public building. The City Water Board and officials were present, except Mr. Hall, who is out of the city.
The display tributes was magnificent, splendid pieces being sent by the Riverside mill employes, by the knights and by friends. The services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Clark, of Thomson M.E. church, and were very impressive. A quartette rendered the music. The funeral cortege was headed by Wheeling Comma which paraded fifty swords, and which was followed by the Essenic Order and the sorrowing family, relatives and friends. A special Elm Grove train conveyed the funeral to Greenwood, where the services were by the Knights Templar.
The pall-bearers were Sir Knights J. H. Klieves. F. H. Williams, S. B. Warrick. D. Ritchie, D.E. Hare and Peter Boyd..
