A COLUMBUS TRAGEDY
Recalled by a Frightful Affair in the Ohio Penitentiary.
ELLIOTT, A CONVICT, ASSAULTED
By a Fellow Prisoner, and While Prostrate Several Ounces of Vitriol Are Thrown in His Face -Both Eyes Badly Burned, and His Face and Head in a Horrible Condition--The Injured Man Was tho Principal in the Elliott • - Osborne Newspaper Feud.
COLUMBUS, O., June 13. -This morning, at the penitentiary, W, W. Varney, a Cincinnati thief, threw vitriol on William Elliott's face, which probably will cause the loss of an eye. Varney, who is a cutter in the state tailor shop, claimed Elliott had him punished by reporting falsely that he sold a coat to a guard, Elliott is the newspaper man who helped kill two men and wounded eight or nine others on the street here, February 23, 1891.
When Elliott left his cell he went to breakfast as usual, alone via the chapel and fire department, passing between them through a narrow alley. Varney lying in wait, having got away from his company by means not known, struck Elliott with a fireman's nozzle, cutting gash on his head through his cap three inches long and knocking him down. The nozzle is three feet long and weighs twenty pounds. Varney then, white Elliott was down, threw several ounces of vitriol in his face. The injured man's eclarotic coat of the right eye is burned off, and his left eve is badly injured. The right side of his face and head are horribly burned. Elliot had to be carried to the hospital, greatly did he rave on account of the injury.
Dr. Rowles, prison physician, says it will take two days to determine the full extent of the injury.
Elliott says he never gave Varney cause for the act, being innocent of interference with his prison career. Varney says Elliott has been interfering with him for two years and dogging him on all occasions. Varney is a seven year man; Elliott is a life man. Varney is to be turned over to the civil authorities..
