• THEO. R. QUICK, GALETON BANKER, ENDS LIFE FOLLOWING ARREST
Well Known Man Charged With Forgery and Embezzlement Following Closing of Galeton Banking Company--Arrest Made By Sheriff and State Trooper- End of Career of Brilliant Man Who Came to County in Youth and Held Various Responsible Positions - Sympathy For Members of Family.
It was learned here last Thursday, that a warrant had been issued that day by Justice F. J. Wandall, for the arrest of Theodore R. Quick, who for years was cashier of the Galeton Banking Company. The document was placed in the hands of Sheriff B. L. VanDeBoe, who telephoned the state police at Galeton, requesting that Quick be apprehended. Upon the arrival of Sheriff VanDeBoe at Galeton, it was learned that Mr. Quick was at his camp on the Cross Fork at Abbott. The sheriff accompanied by State Trooper Reigel and Chief Matteson of Galeton, went to Abbott, and placed Quick under arrest. accompanied Quick in the latter's car to Galeton, where Quick requested that he be allowed to go to his home to change clothing. This request was granted and Trooper Reigel followed the prisoner about the house until Quick went in the bath room clad only in underwear. The door was left partially open. A few moments later a report was heard and Quick was found where he had fallen with part of his body in the bath tub and a bullet from a 32 calibre revolver through his head. The unfortunate breathed for a few minutes but did not become conscious.
Officer Reigel is not censured in any way as he had used every precaution to prevent the tragedy up to the point where Quick had entered the bath room, and there his natural modesty prevented his going.
Coroner G. A. Meikle, who resides at Galeton, was called and decided an inquest was unnecessary as the case was plainly one of suicide.
While still a young man Quick removed to Oswayo, and accepted a posttion as bookkeeper in a tannery there. Natural ability and an engaging personality gained him a wide circle of friends and rapid promotion in his work. He was removed to Galeton to accept the responsible, position of superintendent Galeton tannery when only 23 years of age. He held this position for 12 years, becoming at that time cashier for the Galeton Banking Company, a private THEODORE R. QUICK
institution by which he was employed until it closed at the time of the banking holiday and did not reopen.
The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community has been given members of the family. Mr. Quick's sincere interest in the welfare of Galeton and his pleasing manner made him many friends.
He is survived by his widow, Martha, one son, Teddy, two sisters, Mrs. J. Calkins, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Laura Simmons, of Garland, and a brother, Harry, also of Garland..
