• "GIRL FROM MARS" STOPS IN ALTOONA
Theatrical Company Turned Down by Manager Pentz, of This City, Has Gone to Pieces
Altoona, Jan. 14.-The "Girl From Mars" opera company, which played in this city Thursday afternoon and evening, was brought to a sudden termination this morning when the acting manager and treasurer, E. J. Nugent, and the leading lady, Dorothy Duryea, who claims to be Nugent's wife, were each held $300 bail by Alderman J. J. Irwin for their appearance at the next session of court upon the charge of conspiracy to defraud the members of the company.
The information ,was made by Jack Spaulding, one of members of the troop, who alleges that Mr. Nugent with Dorothy Duryea conspired to abscond from Altoona yesterday morning on an early train and leave the members of the troupe in the city stranded. The manager was arrested yesterday morning upon another charge and was placed in jail. Later in the day another warrant was sworn out against the manager and the leading lady, Miss Duryea, who in the meantime had gone to Pittsburg. She was brougth back to Altoona last night and the two were given a hearing before Alderman Irwin this morning with the result that both were locked up to await trial at court.
The troupe consists of eight members, besides the two arrested, and one of the actors in his testimony stated that there was not five to be found among the whole number. One of the members of the company testifled that the management owal her $115 wages, which was withheld from her. All the members of the company claimed that the manager promised to pay them Friday morning, when they were to start for York, where they were booked to appear last night. In the meantime it was learned that Mr. Nugent and the leading lady intended going west early in the morning, leaving the company here with their bills unpaid.
The company referred to in the above despatch was booked to appear. at the York opera house last Friday night, but owing to unfavorable reports ager Pentz earlier in the week cancelled the booking..
