Actually, Home of the first Miss United States, Myrtle Meriwether, a modest gift/millenery shop owner in Shinglehouse won the contest, later changed to Miss America.
Thanks to Rick Geiger & Dayle James
In Rehoboth Beach in 1880 Miss Myrtle Meriwether competed in the Miss United States contest, where Thomas Edison was one of the judges, and she won based on “attractiveness of costume and the combination of poise, face, figure, hands, feet, carriage and grace.” Her prizes were a gilded plaque and a wedding gown, which she sold for half the value to pay for her expenses for extending her trip to compete in the competition! She then returned to her millinery/gift shop in Shinglehouse and faded into history. A roadside sign does exist in Shinglehouse to give the deserved glory to the first winner of a beauty pageant in the United States.

Interesting information I never knew. My parents sold their Hundred-Acre Farm in 1956 and moved to Little Genessee just before I was born, but we all returned to attend church each Sabbath at the little Shinglehouse Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Will Cheer We went to church in Richburg, NY from Little Genesee until after I left home to go to school in Ohio. It was then that you and the family went to the church in Shinglehouse.

In 1880, Miss Myrtle Meriwether, a gift shop owner of Shinglehouse became famous as the first crowned Miss America. At that time she was called Miss United States. Her prize was a gilded plaque and a complete bridal outfit.

Monica Scott Hoodak Myrtle Meriwether. A name which has mostly been lost to the years, BUT...did you know she was the first "Miss United States" AND she is from Shinglehouse in Potter County? In Rehoboth Beach in 1880 she competed in the Miss United States contest, where Thomas Edison was one of the judges, and she won based on “attractiveness of costume and the combination of poise, face, figure, hands, feet, carriage and grace.” Her prizes were a gilded plaque and a wedding gown, which she sold for half the value to pay for her expenses for extending her trip to compete in the competition!
