Sentenced for Life
Wall Hatfield Convicted of
Murdering the Three Mccoys

NEW YORK, NY - (September 5) - A Pikeville, KY special says: The trial of Wall Hatfield has been concluded. The jury found him guilty of being an accessory to the act of murdering the three McCoys - Tolbert, aged 38 years; Randall, 19 years, and Farmer, 14 years. Alexander Messer confessed to the murder of Farmer, the youngest, and both were sentenced to the penitentiary for life.

These trials are a result of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, which has caused so much terror on the line of Kentucky and West Virginia during the two or three years. It would be difficult to ascertain just how many lives have been sacrificed in this famous vendetta.

Barbara Vance Cherep, a friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page, said Valentine Wall Hatfield "was arrested as part of the three McCoy murders on Election Day in 1882, though not arrested until 1888. It's also in the records that he walked the streets of Pikeville, and was never incarcerated in Pikeville."

She explained, "Because of his stature in life, they allowed Wall to go and come. He was found guilty and sent to prison as a conspirator for the murders of the McCoy men. He never killed anyone to my knowledge."

"Wall was charged for his involvement in the initial killing of the three McCoy brothers in 1882, said Ryan Hardesty, another friend of this page. "No one ever suggested that Wall had anything to do with the raid on the McCoy home. In fact, other than his involvement in the killing of the three McCoy brothers, he had no other involvement in any feud events."

He added, "Wall apparently felt that he would be found innocent of his charges and so voluntarily turned himself in to face trial. He lost. He died very soon after being sent to the prison, which was known for its brutal conditions. He probably died of disease caught while there. Also, the prison was in Frankfort, Kentucky, not Lexington."

Author Thomas Dotson offered additional color and details to the Wall Hatfield account for our readers, and defined the story of the others who were charged for feud involvements.

He stated, "Only FIVE of the nine men who were kidnapped to Pikeville stood trial. Wall, Alex Messer, and the Mayhorn brothers, Plyant and Doc, were sentenced to life. All were tried, NOT for killing Alifair McCoy, but for the murder of Tolbert McCoy on August 9, 1882."

He adds, "The only man who ever stood trial for killing Alifair McCoy (Ellison Mounts confessed), was Johnse Hatfield, who was kidnapped to Kentucky in July, 1898, and was convicted of Alifair's murder and sentenced to life in January, 1899. Bill Tom Hatfield was kidnapped to Kentucky the same year as Johnse (1898) and sentenced to life for the 1882 murder of Tolbert McCoy."

(A special thank you to Cherep , Dotson, Hardesty, and others for better illuminating the true Valentine Hatfield account).

My generations removed grandfather also. I come from one of the daughters who’s name was changed down the line from Hatfield to something, to Mayhorn, Francis, Coleman, then to me. Kilgore. Proud of my heritage. My great grandmother remembered fond stories and told me many truths to these feuds. Truths the world may never know. It died with them mostly

Hard to imagine the Graves just being paved over, one would believe that they would have been moved. When they built the Quabbin dam in Massachusetts in the 20s and 30s they actually dug up and moved the graves very sad
