· SKUNK HAIR TOM WALLACE IMAGE SUBMITTED;
WALLACE DESCENDANT TALKS ABOUT "MEAN" RELATIVE
Teri Beth Damron, a valued friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud, submitted this rare image of Skunk Hair Tom Wallace and his wife (unnamed).
Here is an excerpt from Teri's posting relating to the photo and her personal views of Skunk Hair Tom Wallace: "This is my 3x great-grandfather, Tom Wallace, with one of his wives. He, [over his lifetime], had many, many wives and this was his last. This one was supposed to have been in their barn milking the cow, and [certain people claimed] that the cow stepped on her and killed her; but, I think the real reason is that [Tom] killed her himself! He was a very mean man!
"He had many children by those wives, as well. One of his sons (he didn't know half of his kids) came up on the porch of his house and knocked on his door; Tom brought out his gun and pointed it at him … [he] yelled at him and told him to stop [knocking] … and he would have [shot him] if he [hadn’t] stopped!
“… the reason I am posting this is that [Tom Wallace] was in the Hatfield and McCoy Feud-on the Hatfield side-and was Devil Anse's right-hand man.
"... in the made-for-TV-movie [the Hatfields & McCoys miniseries] they killed Tom Wallace-but that was not true! They [McCoy supporters] DID scalp him though, but it did not kill him. [Historians] said that he later died of natural causes, or something like that.
"But [people in the Tug Valley region] did, however, call him "Skunk Head” … I think that this is the reason that they scalped him! And I don't know if you can tell it in this picture, or not, but he does have a bad hand-and I can't remember if it was his right hand or his left. It was caused by him getting burned for some reason or another.
“… I hope that you enjoy this picture of Devil Anse's right hand man.”

Tom was my brother in laws grandfather. My brother in law's mother was Tom's daughter and she was a beautiful woman. The movie shows him killed and scalped but my brother in law was a little boy who was in the room with his mother when Tom passed away. He was in his 80's I believe.

His wife was kicked by the cow while milking her and she bleed to death. The woman is my grandmother Nancy. Gf Tom was Cap's best friend not Devil Anne's right hand man. Tom died in 1933 heart attack.

Hersh Wallace My research puts his death as 1933 as well however I came across this recently. My theory is that he essentially faked his own death. Do you have any information or knowledge on this?

I have a dear friend I grew up with in church here in NC. He went away to Bible College in Nashville TN and became a preacher. He married one of the sweetest young ladies I have ever had the pleasure to meet, Pamela Hatfield from WV. Devil Anse was her Great Great Great grandfather.

Joan Rettig yes movies glamorize and not always truthful. My father was interviewed for books, provided pictures, which were never returned to the family.

Omg. Google and read all about him. According to Tom Wallace’s death certificate, he was buried in Mingo County, West Virginia. This is the same place papaw was born.
