LOGAN COUNTY IN THE 1800s?
In the book, Land of the Guyandot, by late Mountain State historian Robert Y. Spence, the author states that City of Logan resident John "Buss" Buskirk (shown in this image) once penned an informative letter to the editor that was published in the May 31, 1894 edition of The Logan County Banner.
In his writings, Buskirk described the Logan of the mid-to-late 1800s as being “the best poor man’s country on earth,” since residents were mostly earthy and resilient men and women. He adds that they could plant meager gardens-as well as gather wild nuts, roots, herbs, and fruit-and fish all spring and summer. After harvest season, they would then hunt wild game -squirrels, groundhogs, opossums, turkeys, quail, pheasant, whitetail deer, and black bear- throughout the fall and winter seasons.
Spence also emphasized that, until the arrival of large timbering operations, Logan Countians could mostly live solely off the land without paying any attention to state or national economic concerns. See less
