Hatfield and McCoy Feud

Dyke and Sallie Smith Garrett posed for this portrait when Dyke was approximately seventy years old. The couple resided in the Chapmanville area, in Logan County, West Virginia. Garrett, born in 1841, was known far and wide as an effective circuit-riding preacher responsible for organizing new churches in Logan and Mingo Counties.
Over the course of his ministry, he preached numerous sermons at indoor and open-air revival services held around the territory. Garret also performed hundreds of local baptismal services, although the first record of such a baptism conducted by the preacher was published in the Logan County Banner, in December 1889, and took place at Big Creek.
Performing the baptism of Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, in 1911, was one of his proudest achievements, as the minister quipped afterwards to a young friend that he had “successfully baptized the devil.”
During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Confederate States Army; and after the war, he and Devil Anse were members of Camp Straton United Confederate Veterans. Garrett died May 29, 1938.

Ha!Ha! I read your thing Liisa and I laughed myself silly. We really do have some strange names don't we?! And when I typed "stragglier", I said to myself, "Self.....I wonder if this is a word!" Dadgum if I know. Sounds right to me. He was too neat with his beard for Devil Anse though. I thought that was important for the movie. You know Patty Peel's grandma was married to John McCoy (Tag's mom). Now there you go, laughing about the name "Tag". Just kidding you. Thanks for the huge belly laugh.

He was one of the co-founders of the first church of Christ in Chapmanville. His pic hung on the wall about midway back in the church. I thought it was a picture of God ????
