· CAP'S GRANDSON AND STATE JOURNALIST HONORED IN 2005
This rare photograph depicts two great Mountain State historians together. They were both from Logan County, WV. At left, Robert Y. Spence, journalist, stands beside author and researcher Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield, the grandson of Cap and Nan’ Hatfield, and great-grandson of feudist Devil Anse and Levicy Hatfield.
Dr. Hatfield and Spence were the co-authors of the Award-Winning and Amazon Top 100 Bestseller, “The Tale of the Devil: The Biography of Devil Anse Hatfield” (Woodland Press).
On the day this photo was taken, the two had been guests of honor and spoke to an audience at the West Virginia Book Festival 2005, held at the Charleston Civic Center. The engagement became a "standing-room-only gathering" as the two discussed their historical research, and shared elements of the Hatfield-McCoy feud story.
By this period, Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield had also received the prestigious Tamarack Author of the Year Award in 2004, pertaining to “The Tale of the Devil.” The volume was also recognized throughout the nation by book distributors and wholesalers, book reviewers, libraries, and fellow historians. The same year, Hatfield was paid honor and shown appreciation by several governors and dignitaries in West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, and elsewhere for his literary efforts.
Hatfield also later wrote "The Feuding Hatfields & McCoys,” a timeline format of the famous feud, which includes rare family stories passed down from the feud patriarch, Devil Anse Hatfield. Additionally, Spence penned the southern West Virginia historical classic, "Land of the Guyandot."
In 2012, Dr. Hatfield’s books, “The Tale of the Devil” and "The Feuding Hatfields & McCoys” were used as resource materials for the Emmy® Award-Winning History channel miniseries, “Hatfields & McCoys,” and the History channel companion documentary, “America’s Great Feud: Hatfields and McCoys."
Both men are greatly missed.

I loved Coleman Hatfield. He was my next door neighbor in Alabama following his marriage to Virginia. He spent many hours telling me about his research of our family. I truly miss him!

Wonderful men who left this earth better than they found it and that is one of several reasons why preserving history is so important!
