USMA Class of 1957. Cullum No. 21434.
Herbert Charles Rice was the only son of Herbert and Hazel Rice, who were both school teachers. He received many full scholarships including one to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated in 1957 and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Denise, in the Catholic Church in Hamburg, New York they reported to primary flying school at Graham Air Force Base in Marianna, Florida and then to Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas, for multi-engine basic training. After earning his silver wings, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command, first to B-47 training at McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas and then to B-52s. He completed five years as a B-52 pilot with the Strategic Air Command at Loring Air Force Base in Maine where the average snowfall is 140 inches. In 1965, he was selected for an Air Force Institute of Technology-sponsored MBA program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In June 1966 after graduation, he received orders for Vietnam. The family moved to Florida where they bought their first home near Elgin Air Force Base. He trained at Hurlbert Field as a pilot in the AC-47 gunship. He departed for Vietnam on December 26, 1966. On March 29, 1967, he volunteered to fill in as copilot for an ill crewmember on an AC-47 gunship mission. All seven crewmembers died that night when the AC-47 was shot down while providing air support to ground forces engaged with the enemy. His awards included the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Air Force Commendation Medal with a second oak leaf cluster for his duty in Vietnam. Services were held at the Catholic Church in Hamburg, New York with interment at West Point. Survivors included his wife and four children.
