New York, Oct. 8. -- Charles Coppersmith, a carpenter of No. 7S2 Eleventh avenue, 30 years old, who has supported bis wife and children by doing odd jobs, and who has been a good deal of a butt for ridicule forthe "smart Alecks" of the neighborhood, died on Sunday last In Roosevelt Hospital and his body was found to be covered with bruises. Tbe phy sician In charge says that he believes death was caused by beatings the man bad received From investigation yesterday it was learned mat iso;-peraroirn was in Louis Ferber's saloon. No. 784 Eleventh avenue, on the evening of September 15 last, and he was teased and called "Waddy Googan" until be finally threw a glass of beer in tbe face of one of bis tormenters. Coppersmith afterward told his wife and his laudlady that be was beaten by the crowd and flung into tbe street by the proprietor of the saloon. He managed to pull himself together and find Policeman Costello. Costello advised him to get a warrant for Ferber. Coppersmitn had Ferber arrested next day. In the Fifty-seventh Street Police Court Ferber had a score of witnesses to prove tbat he did not touch Coppersmith and he was discharged. A day or two afterward John Fischer of No, 602 West Fifty-fourth street, a relative of Ferber, knocked Coppersmith down and gave him a whipping, and on the 1st Inst. John Fitzgerald, a young tough who hangs around Ferber's saloon, punched Coppersmith again. Coppersmith, since he was first beaten, had complained of pains in his haad. and on Friday last he was taken to Roosevelt Hospital. An autopsy will be made today by Deputy coroner Weston. John Fitzgerald was arrested last night by detectives of tbe Forty-seventh Street Station. Deputy Coroner Weston will make an antopsy to discover the exact cause of Coppersmith's death.
