• Removal of Meter Heads Re-establishes Free Parking
Action Is Hailed By Coudersport Businessmen Who Led Fight Against Metered Parking--Supports to Remain Temporarily.
A nine-month habit was broken here Monday afternoon the habit developed by motorists of reaching for a coin when they parked in the business section of the borough.
With the removal of parking meters by Lloyd Chilson, the street commissioner, and his crew, free parking was re-established.
Only the heads--the mechanical part-were removed. The cast iron supports, which, headless, stana as symbols of a successful campaign by Coudersport merchants seeking their removal, will not be taken out until the weather becomes warmer.
Packed in metal boxes and stored in the borough building Monday night, the meter heads will be shipped this morning by rail. A company representative supervised the packing.
The Council voted without dissent Jan. 19 to abolish metered parking after a delegation of businessmen charged it was affecting business adversely. At a previous meeting, a spokesman for the mechants presented a petition bearing about 150 signatures asking for the removal of meters.
Merchants who observed workmen removing the meters could scarcely restrain a smile. Others were frank in reiterating their previously stated arguments that meters had hurt business and that their removal would affect shopping favorably.
One of the most outspoken critics of metered parking remarked that "the same old cars are already back at the same old stands" and expressed the view that if merchants return to the practice of parking in front of their establishments to the exclusion of shoppers, "meters will be back before Labor Day."
A spot check yesterday revealed at least four automobiles parked in front of or near their owners' places of business and offices..
