ANOTHER GERMANIA BREWERY - ENGEL & SCHMIDT
I picked up the following thread from the Facebook group “Old timers of Galeton / Germania / Gains”

John Gross writes: “The story in my mom's family always was that Schmidt's brewery originated in Germania... This lends some credence to that theory.. I was a relative of the Schmidt that started that brewery in partnership with his brother. ( much like the Schwatzenbach brothers) Cousins I think one of them married into the Straley line somewhere... There was a Katie Schmidt that came from Philadelphia to visit my Grandparents, the Straleys... I wish I knew exactly where it was located. Story went that it was on Constitution Ave. somewhere near where the Germania Fire company is now.. Dave Rawson lives in that area now. The picture does show a hill in back of the brewery so that may be true also...”
John Gross also wrote: “Schmidt's actually started exactly where Dave Rawson's house is located. There is/was a cold cellar that was supposedly connected to the brewery...Family stories, actually my granddad Straley related them to me.. (wish I'd have recorded them somehow)”
Pip Burrous writes: “Pure Springs Brewing Co, Countain Springs opened in 1897 as the Engel & Schmidt Brewing Co, closed in 1934.”
Sandy Dingle writes: “This was located behind the firehall according to the Germania book. John Gross said it was connected with the Schmidt’s and they were related to his family somehow?”
Does anyone from our group have anything to add?
