William E. Hawkins
THE VILLAGES - William (Bill) Elroy Hawkins, 89, passed from this life Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Born November 20, 1924 in Williamsport, PA he was the son of the late Nelson R. and Lillian V. (Bloom) Hawkins. Bill graduated from Coudersport, PA High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served his country with distinction. He continued in the Air Force and became an electrician instructor on the B-52 aircraft. During his off hours he became a ham radio operator and a pilot. In 1947 he married Jeanne Fickler in Coudersport, PA. In 1948 he played on the European Championship Football Team and flew in the Berlin Air Lift. He retired from the Air Force in 1967. Following retirement, he worked for NASA for 10 years as a support manager. He was also an avid golfer and was a member of Colonial Country Club for 18 years. He married Gloria Lois Davis and moved to Fort Worth, Texas. Gloria passed in 2012 and Bill moved to The Villages in October 2012. He is survived by 3 sons, Nelson "Bud" Hawkins, Jeffrey T. Hawkins, and Jon Christopher Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his son, William E. Hawkins, Jr. Bill will be buried in Florida National Cemetery with full Military Honors on Thursday, February 6, 2014. For on-line sentiments visit www.hiers-baxley.net.
