"Willie" was born in September, 1856, the son of John G. and Sarah Merriman Moshier, farmer in Martinsburg, NY. According to that town's 1870 census, the household also included a sister, Sarah, and two brothers Charles and Isaac. A sister, Caroline, had already married Albert C. Boshart of Lowville and another brother, John, Jr. lived in the Midwest.
