Did anyone else notice that the people are never smiling in these old photos. The right to happiness is a relatively new thought process. Basic needs was a much stronger thought back then. No one thought they had a so called right to be happy. Just something I read once and it made me think of it when I look at their faces.

Lanny Nunn The reason they had them not smile when taken pictures way back when.It was to easy to move there lips.And that would spill the shot.

Tim Chase Lanny is right. Shutter speed on the cameras was so slow that the subjects had to be perfectly still.

Ric Main I would beg to differ from the opinions regarding shutter speeds post 1870's for if that were true then many of the eyes would be blurry because surely, someone blinked. If you own a decent digital camera you can make the adjustments to see my point. …See More

Larry Johnson Film speeds increased gradually. Until the 1920-1930 decade speeds were slow. My Dad would say, "Hold still, this is not a moving picture".
