SMETHPORT YOUNG PEOPLE DROWNED
Girl and Young Man Swept Under Ice Despite Efforts to Save Their Lives.
Breaking through the ice of Marvin Creek while skating, Louise Hazen, 15, and Klaus Anderson, 22, were drowned in 14 feet of water at Smethport Monday night. Their bodies were recovered.
Harry Hull, who was attempting a rescue, narrowly escaped drowning and Glenn Mencer and "Red" Terry were thrown into the water when ice broke under them as they were trying to save Miss Hazen.
With Anderson treading water and Miss Hazen clinging to the edge of the ice when they arrived on the scene, Mencer and Terry threw a clothes line to Miss Hazen. After signalling that she had made the rope fast to her hand, she was being dragged over the ice when it broke for the second time she was swept under. Her body was recovered a half hour later near where she sank by Patrolman John Eagan, of the Smethport substation of the highway patrol.
