BOY'S RASH ACT WAS TO PROTECT FAMILY FROM DRINK CRAZED PARENT
_____
Darrel Dufton, 16-year old slayer of his father was today admitted to bail in the amount of $10,000 by Judge J. W. Bouton. Lester Simons, well known Bradford attorney and E. W. Jones become bondsmen for the lad.
______
Darrel Dufton, 16, fired the fatal shot which early Monday morning resulted in the death of his father, Fred Dufton, 47, of Wrights, following a protracted period of alleged drunken raging during which Dufton had driven all members of his family from their home and had threatened to kill them. Darrel made a complete voluntary confession to County Detective Jack Allison yesterday afternoon.
"I did it because I couldn't stand to see those little kids get their brains knocked out. I wish I had shot myself instead of him," Darrel sobbed out the story of the fatality.
Coroner H. Clay Heffner conducted an inquest into the fatal shooting last night in Gallup's undertaking parlors In Port Allegany. Mrs. Dufton and Fred were the chief witnesses. Darrel was not present. He is being detained in the county jail, a formal charge of murder having been lodged against him following his confession.
Mortal fear and deep love were the motives which prompted the shooting - fear that the father would harm the little ones and a love for them which prompted him under the influence of uncontrollable fear to blindly stop the father from harming the innocent children, 3 and 7 years of age, both boys.
The weapon, a 16 - guage single barrel shotgun, had been 'planted' beside the dead man, it was brought out at the inquest. This, it was testified, was done at the suggestion of the mother in an effort to shield her boy. The suicide story was first told because the older members of the family were so upset over the tragic incident that they were unable to think clearly and realize that this was a false move.
When under oath before Coroner Heffner last night, Mrs. Dufton told a straight forward story, bearing out all details the confessions already made by her sons and of which she knew nothing before she took the witness stand.
That Dufton had come home intoxicated Sunday October 16th and had gone to Liberty and imbibed in more spirits. Returning borne, he apparently was crazed by the liquor he had drunk and began slamming the door, getting a drink of water and hurling the glass out the window. He next, according to the testimony, deliberately demolished a number of fruit jars which Mrs. Dufton had just finished washing. Then he got an iron and hurled it and went into the pantry and broke nearly all the dishes there. After this, he went outside and started to demolish the family automobile.
He returned from the garage and said he would "wind the children
