1 Jul 1863 • Gettysburg, Adams, Pennsylvania
On the 1st day of this battle, my 2X's ggrandfather, Lorenzo Hodges was wounded 3 time: wrist, hip & chest. He was held as a wounded POW in the McPherson Barn until he was moved to the Catholic church in town. He didn't die until 15 days later.
Lorenzo is seen on the left side of this photo. His brother Julius (right side) was allowed to stay with him until he passed away. ????????

Hi Christine. Lorenzo Hodges and his brother served in company G of the 150th Pennsylvania alongside my great great grandfather, Herman Leroy Burlingame, who was also a member of that skirmisher company. HL Burlingame was also wounded on July 1st at Gettysburg. He was shot in the leg during the regiments retreat back into Gettysburg and was harbored for 3 days at the home of Henry Jacobs at Washington and Middle Street in Gettysburg. On July 3rd he was found in the house when Georgia soldiers conducted a search. HL was captured and transported to Libby prison in Richmond Virginia. He was released in a prisoner exchange in October 1863 and he returned to McKean County where he built a farm in Kasson PA

No, Lorenzo was 2 yrs older than Julius. They look so young, don't they? Lorenzo was 25 when he died.

So sad. My 2nd GG William Knickerbocker, company K of the 141st Pennsylvania (Smithfield, Bradford County) died there on July 2nd. Three of his brothers were also killed in The Civil War. :(

Harriet Mattison Share way too many men & boys from that area were lost & families lost multiple sons, like your Knickerbocker family. We saw it in our Kinney families too. Such a terrible war.
