Thought it was your Nan on your Mum's side. Just got confused because your Mum used to say that Kevin was the image of her Dad and I can't see that in this photo. Maybe later in life Kevin looked more like him?

fourth day of the Somme then a year in prisoner of war hospital and then swapped home.

He was in an old pals regiment the North Essex.60% died.

Nan was a Castle they were a long established Barking family ran shops in Barking even a cinema. There is a Rayment my Grand dads name ran a rag and bone business in Tanner street in 1880.

Elizabeth Castle died after putting her hand in some Brussel sprouts. She was born in 1860. She was Nan's Grandmother on her Mother's side.

He may have had red hair when younger .I can not remember his hair I was only 4 when he died. He was only 62 when he died of Pneumonia.

I never knew either of my Grandad's as they both died before my second birthday when they were in their early 60's. Times seemed much harder then - one of them even used to carry on working through minor heart attacks because of the worry of not taking money home!

He was blown up in the first world war lay in a shell whole for three days bleeding to death. Found by the Germans taken to a prisoner of war camp where they operated on him giving him plastic surgery years before we did it in England. He was only able to walk with sticks but in 1951 was give a modified Morris minor then later was hit by a dust cart badly injured and caught pneumonia.

I saw his red cross notes when he was swapped for a German prisoner as he was too badly wounded to go back on active service.

Befor grandad was given the Morris he use to have a hand driven three wheeler I can remember seeing him in it when I was very young.

My Grandparents just before he went off to war and was blown up on the Somme losing the use of his legs about 26 years old there.

Losing his legs didnt affect his sex drive then.

he did not lose them the germans sowed them on with pigs gut and although very damaged he could stand on them with sticks.
