JOHN E. LEONARD . . . Looks ahead to busy summer
Beachside Beat
Many Conventions Coming To Beach By NORMAN WOLFE , Sentinal Staff
DAYTONA BEACH Veteran hotel man John E. Leonard, who manages this city's big convention hotels, Is looking forward to a summer which will bring somewhere near 40,000 conventioneers to Daytona Beach. Actually it might be stretching a point to say that he's looking forward to it but at least he is planning some 24 conventions ranging in size from 40 to 1,600 delegates. The Daytona Plaza, the big oceanfront showplace hotel, and its sister in the Craig Chain, the legended Princess Issena, will handle these convention goers with no strain.
- Leonard functions as general manager of both and has been in Daytona Beach since 1943.

THE TWO hotels book conventions 10 months of the year. The months of Febru ary and March are too crowded with winter tourists to permit profitable booking The hotel yesterday announced the appointment of Marvin Griffith as new sales manager. He comes here from the famed British Colonial Hotel in Nassau and will handle the duties once performed by John Callahan now with Commercial Bank of Daytona. The two hotels now operate their own convention staff which is a change from the old system which was allied with the Chamber of Commerce. Daytona Beach and the City of Port Orange agreed some time ago to stop battling over water customers in the south peninsula area both cities serve. ' They divided the customers and Daytona Bcacn.m withdrawing from part of the area also lopped off its fire service. Now a group of petitioners are grumbling over Port Orange water service and de manding fire protection be restored. The City of Daytona Beach has notified them however that it will stand bcliind its agreement with Port Orange. The only possible out would seem to be annexation of the territory favored by many city officials. Musical Program Set For Summer Music lovers can look for ward to a series of hi-fi con certs each Friday at 8 p.m. at the Seabreeze Recreation Center.
