I'm trying to get my bearings. Was this picture taken from somewhere near where the Five Elms now stands? And is that the Allegheny River a short distance behind the girls?

The 2 homes are at end of Ross Street. Formerly Erways and Jewitts.

hummm. so if the previous picture shows the C&PA tracks "near the clothespin factory".....that would be the line that ran to Sweden Valley to service a large sawmill there.....I think....

That tram track ran into Sweden Valley right in front of the house in which I grew up. It wasn't a house at the time; it was a structure made from scrap wood and a make shift train station. The saw mill was on the other side of Mill Creek where the pond now sits by Gary's Putter Golf. There are old photographs of that area buried in large logs surrounding the saw mill.

The tram track also ran along the hillside behind Gary's and continued on toward where the Coudersport Golf Club is. I have hiked that tram track.

So, the open area, behind the women and children, is the area where Dwight and Ross streets would later become, as well as the high school? And if so, it appears that the clothespin factory would have been about where the house at Othner's Pond now sits. Here is an 1893 Landowner map that shows that area, and we can see that Mill Creek came into town, closer to route 6 (Second Street)

About where the people are standing, there was a dirt road that went down the hill to the intersection of Dwight Street and what is now School Street. The Serkleski house was there. Anyone who grew up in that area at the time has fond memories of sled riding down that hill. Sleds could make it almost to Ross Street, I think. The borough put up a sign to caution motorists on Dwight Street that there were sled riders ahead.
I lived in the neighborhood until 1965, when I graduated from high school. Coudersport was a great place to grow up, and the neighborhood was a great place to live. Our neighborhood playground included the wooded hillside above East Second Street and the wooded hillside shown in this photo.
On the wooded hillside in the background, there is one, maybe two, rail beds. I never knew why they were there until now. I last walked on a bed from the Freeman House at Ladona to Othmer’s Pond in 2010.

I'm making an educated guess that that empty flat area is the property that was later owned by Owen G Metzger, which he donated to Coudersport for the purpose of an athletic field. That provision was, somehow, skirted and ignored by the town officials, and it became the Coudersport High School. Comparing that photo with the map, it appears that the indentation cutting across the landscape was Mill Creek.

I find it somewhat disconcerting that the history of Coudersport is not more well known. For a time, the football field at the High School was known as Metzger Field, but that was quickly forgotten when the C.A.R.P. took the attention away from the High School Football field. Now it's just a field. In my opinion, the school should have been named Owen G Metzger High School. Coudersport is small enough that it should be able to hand down its history to each generation. We shouldn't have to search so hard to find it. This FaceBook site is a great way to get the facts out. But I would like to see actual plaques placed throughout the town. David Castano told me one day a year and half ago, that plans were in place to do just that. He said money was not a problem. That was over a year ago. I offered to buy a plaque for Metzger Field but he said money wasn't the issue. So......I'm still waiting...

I drove along Park Avenue yesterday and as I approached the bridge that crosses Mill Creek to Othmer's Pond, I looked to my left, toward the road (route 6), 2nd Street, where this photo was taken. The open field behind those women is where the High School now sits. There was no Mill Creek where it now is and there was no Othmer's Pond. That's probably where the Clothespin Factory was located, because the tram track runs along that hillside behind the house next to the pond.

I seem to remember Bob Currin saying that his house was the office for the clothespin factory.

If you look at that map I posted above, it looks like the Fairground was where Center Park is now located. How convenient it would be if the Potter County Fair was still held there :)
