PEACEMAKER, BIG JIM McCOY: This photo is of James H. “Big Jim” McCoy, (Aug 17, 1849 - Aug 30, 1929), the first son of Randolph and Sally McCoy, patriarch and matriarch of the feudin’ McCoys of Pike County, Kentucky.
Big Jim, looking stern and determined in this photograph, was considered by many as one of the most head-strong, dangerous, and skilled of the McCoys during the height of the feud era. He was a natural-born fighter, and was involved in many of the most dangerous feud battles and episodes. One historian once described Big Jim as being “a man of few words-but of ALL action.”
However, although he was one of the most capable and dangerous of the McCoys, there was also another side to this man, being so that a historian described him this way: “He was a peacemaker in the feud and tried to talk [Bad] Frank Phillips out of killing Jim Vance and Bill Dempsey. In 1928, [Big Jim] and Tennis Hatfield, the youngest son of Devil Anse Hatfield, met in Pikeville KY, and called a formal truce between families.”
Newspaper journalist Mark Maynard later wrote about Big Jim’s 1929 passing, and said, “While the majority of the family’s battles happened in Pike County, the bodies of James and Floyd McCoy, of the McCoy clan, are buried on a hill in the Catlettsburg Cemetery. The brothers married women from Catlettsburg, which is why that was their final resting place.”
