This image is of Jeremiah "Jerry" V. Hatfield (1843 -1929) and his family. Jeremiah’s beloved wife was Matilda Lamb Hatfield (1848-1918); and his parents were George Washington Hatfield (1823-1884) and Elizabeth Snyder Hatfield (1812-1885).
The children of Jeremiah and Matilda included John Logan Hatfield (1867-1947), Ella Hatfield (1869-1869), Laura Hatfield Rush (1870-1927), Francis Marion Hatfield (1873-1926), Otto Hatfield (1875-1975), Nora Hatfield Dugger (1878-1964), and Nancy Hatfield Workman (1887-1970).
A veteran, Jeremiah lost his arm in battle during the War Between the States. This photo was likely taken in the mid-1880s.

What a remarkable family portrait a glimpse into lives shaped by hardship, resilience, and love. Jeremiah’s story, especially his sacrifice in the war, adds a powerful layer of meaning to this image. Photos like this don’t just show faces; they preserve entire family legacies.
