· MARY EMILY ERWAY (WELFLING) - 1899
GRADUATE OF MANSFIELD NORMAL SCHOOL
A lady by the name of Shelley Cardiel from Oregon messaged me in December that she has an old studio photograph of Mary E. Erway of Harrison Valley, Potter County, PA which was taken at the Raileys Normal School Gallery in Mansfield, PA. She googled the name on the back and found it in my family genealogy. Shelley offered to send it to a family member who may be interested. I then contacted Steve Erway, who then connected Shelly with Mary’s granddaughters, Mary Bowman Welfling and Elizabeth Watkins King Welfling. This is that photo. I did my own research and found that It was Mary’s 1899 graduation photo from the Normal School, now known as Mansfield University.
Mary Emily Erway was born on 07 Mar 1880 at the home of her grandfather Bowman in Brookfield Twp., Tioga County, PA the daughter of Andrew Jackson Erway and Martha Anne Bowman. A year later her father and family moved back to Potter County to a farm in Harrison Twp. Mary finished her studies at the high school there in 1897. On 06 Jul 1904, she married Rudolph O. Welfling who was a teacher and principal at the Harrison Valley High School. In 1908 Prof. Welfling was elected Potter County Superintendent of Schools and the family moved to Coudersport where Mrs. Welfing would teach for 42 years before retiring in 1950. Mary’s husband Rudolph was born on 10 Feb 1877 to Charles Fredrick Welfling Sr and Frances Verna Kerthley. Their only child, Weldon Woodrow Welfling, was born in 1912. Unfortunately, Rudolph died an untimely death at age 40 on 10 Jan 1918 in a Buffalo hospital.
Mary continued on and was very active in several local organizations, especially the Historical Society where she served as Secretary-Treasurer. For several years she kept the property of the Historical Society in her home. She wrote several documents, including a booklet entitled “Ole Bull in Potter County” and a poem entitled “Potter County Hills”. After selling her home, she divided her time between her son, Weldon’s residence in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and that of her niece, May Goodenough at Gold. Mary died on 21 Feb 1974 at Shaker Heights, OH at the age of 93.

Loretta Mosch Mauz Raineselo received her degree in Secondary Education, Dietetics and Home Economics from Mansfield. Since her birthday was late December and she was only 17, her college acceptance needed special consideration. World War II was raging and my dad was in the Army so she attended additional classes in summer sessions to finish her degree in 3 years in 1943. Mom taught Home Economics in Galeton High School. After our move to Erie , Pa she was a Dietician at Hamot Hospital. She later taught Home Economics at Northeast High School and she always considered that position as her dream job.
