William Anderson "Cap" Hatfield Jr., the second child of Anderson “Devil Anse” and Levicy Hatfield, was born in 1864. Cap Hatfield is pictured here late in life, perhaps in the late 1920s.
Cap, a crack-shot with rifle or pistol, has often been described as one of the most proficient sharpshooters of the clan, and the most violent of the feud participants. During the feud era, he was also called intimidating as his father's lead enforcer, and his older brother Johnse's protector.
J.D. Charles, a retired Logan County reporter, once wrote: "Cap Hatfield looms large over the entire feud. He was often portrayed as a lawless murderer; but the authors (of the book "The Tale of the Devil", penned by Dr. Coleman C. Hatfield) show Cap to have been a man who seemed to resent being used as a lieutenant by his father, and a man who sought peace later in life-first by farming, then by studying to be an attorney, and finally becoming a deputy sheriff for Logan County."
Cap was especially well-suited for law enforcement and was said to be a strong and intimidating figure, even into old age ( as shown in this photo). His law firm in Logan, WV, remained a thriving practice for many years.
Cap passed away on Aug. 22, 1930.
