This touching portrait is of Mary "Polly” Harriet Hatfield (1888-1962), with son George Anderson Hatfield (1905-1994).
Polly was the wife of Elias M. Hatfield (1878-1911), the son of William Anderson "Devil Anse" and Levisa “Levicy" Hatfield.
Both Elias and his brother, Troy, died on Oct. 17th, 1911, during a fierce gun battle against Octtavio Jerome-an Italian liquor salesman-at Harewood, a short distance below Boomer, WV.
The Hatfield brothers succumbed to bullet wounds inflicted upon them by Jerome; however, Jerome was also shot and killed in the three-way exchange of gunfire at the deadly encounter.
Polly became a grieving widow, as George also lost his father.
The Hatfield brothers were buried at the Hatfield Family Cemetery, Sarah Ann, WV.
