· Johnse and Cap Hatfield, the first two children of Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield: They were extremely close brothers, but what were some of their differences?
To many the dissimilarities between Johnse and his brother were obvious and many. While Johnse was seemingly wild and carefree, Cap was far more serious-minded and brooding. Both drank homespun whiskey, but Johnse had more of a problem stopping.
Apparently, Johnse was considered the more handsome of the two, with his smooth complexion, dark blonde hair, and clear blue eyes. His younger brother was pie-faced with ruddy skin, thin dark hair, and handlebar mustache.
Both were tough hombres by anyone’s standards; and they were extremely intelligent (although neither could read until later in life). Yet, Cap went on to study law and passed the bar.
While Johnse was known for his legendary exploits with the ladies, his brother was more calculating and one who practiced his marksmanship consistently. For that, Cap's speed and accuracy with a handgun was described by one historian as being phenomenal. In his hey day, Cap was considered one of the best gunslingers (and/or rifle shots) in the West Virginia hills, perhaps second only to that of his legendary father, Devil Anse.
Both became successful business men.

In the movie Cap lost an eye but still became the best shooter. Is that true of him in real life? It was in a logging accident I believe

Johnce got the reputation of being a womanizer when the writers said he had a relationship with Roseanne McCoy..apparently she had his baby truth is there wasn't even a grave marker for the baby until 1940

My mother was a McCoy. But her branch, instead of Kentucky, migrated to North Georgia. They became well known moonshiners and would fight in a New York minute. Must be in the genes..

Bobby Shewmake I think there’s was a little harder. One of the was a true outlaw. Jim McCoy. He was sentenced to hang for murdering a revenuer but got a retrial and got off. Could have been some jury tampering going on. He was later shot and killed by his son. Good times…
