Hatfield, JD 4 Sheriff OmarWV colorized FB210617GregMillerHMcCF

Hatfield and McCoy Feud
June 15, 2021 · [Colorized by Greg Miller

This rare and tattered photograph from 1929 was taken at Omar, WV. Notice the political sign: J.D. Hatfield (Joe Hatfield) was running for Sheriff of Logan County. "Hatfield Means Success!! Sincere!! And Capable!!”

Also, notice the men in the back row with their lace-up thick leather boots. These functional boots were especially common and popular among loggers and lumberjacks of the period. The footwear offered a measure of safety (from poisinous snakes, etc.) while hiking or working in the underbrush, woodlands, and remote mountains of Appalachia.

Historian and Author Brandon Ray Kirk recently posted a pertinent 1927 newspaper article from the Logan County Banner that gives details relating to Joe D. Hatfield and his political bid for county sheriff; click here: https://brandonraykirk.com/.../joe-hatfield-for-sheriff.../ See less
