Hatfield and McCoy Feud

Detroit W. "Troy" Hatfield (1881-1911), one of the sons of Devil Anse and Levisa "Levicy" Hatfield, is pictured at left, in the front row, standing among a group of well-dressed detectives. At the far right is Troy's younger brother, Emmanuel Wilson “Willis” Hatfield (1888-1978). The other men in the photograph are unnamed.

At the same time, Troy, who was well-known in the region as being a skilled marksman and a capable businessman, worked with another of his brothers, Elias M. Hatfield (1878-1911), in the Fayette County liquor trade. During this period, he also served as a railroad detective.

Not long after this image was taken, Troy and his brother, Elias, became deeply involved in a fatal gunfight with a rival liquor dealer, Octtavio Jerome, near the community of Harewood, close to the village of Boomer, WV. It was on October 17, 1911, that all three men — Troy, Elias, and Octtavio — lost their lives in an exchange of gunfire.

Troy and Elias were laid to rest together on the hillside of the Hatfield Family Cemetery in Sarah Ann, Logan County, WV, while Octtavio Jerome was buried in Fayette County.

Troy's widow was Cora M. Vines Hatfield (1884–1984), whom he had married in 1908. The widow of Elias was Mary Harriet "Polly" Holland Hatfield (1888-1962), whom he married in 1904.
